Ariana:

Moping around the house all morning, I lost myself in my own misery, while the pendulum in my mind swung in an erratic arc. I still hadn’t sobbed my heart out, and that disturbed me more than anything.

How many times in the past had I been propositioned by both men and women in the dance scene? Flattering as the attention was, it didn’t occur to me to break my marriage vows. Was that the difference between us? He had succumbed while I had abstained.

Here I was slothing about our home and he’d gone off to find himself. What was wrong with this scene? Perhaps I should have had an affair. Would that have helped me deal with this now? I didn’t think so.

All morning I had ignored countless texts and phone calls, knowing that most would be from Leon.

Flopping onto the sofa, Nero joined me. I flicked on the television. Women were chatting about breastfeeding in public. That was usually right up my street, but I couldn’t get into it. I switched the TV off.

A loud rap at the front door startled me. Nero jumped off my lap.

“Ariana, I know you’re in there. Leon has been trying to get hold of you. Are you okay?”

It sounded like Braer. I wasn’t sure I wanted to talk to her, and buried my head in a pillow, trying to block out the non-stop knocking.

“Ariana. Open the door. I’m not leaving until you do.”

“Go away.”

“No.”

“Please?”

“No!”

“Fuck it.” I uncrossed my feet and got up.

“Ariana.”

“Okay, okay. Keep your hair on.” I unlocked the door.

“Bloody hell. You look like you’ve been dragged through a hedge backwards.”

I pushed my hair out of my face. “Tell me something I don’t know.”

“What’s happened?”

I didn’t feel like confessing all. “Nothing.”

“I don’t believe you,” said Braer. “Can I come in?”

“Would it make any difference if I said no?”

She pushed the door closed behind her and followed me to the kitchen.

“I can’t talk right now,” I whispered, doing my best to keep myself together.

“Let’s go into the lounge.” Braer took my hand and dragged me with her. “You’ve made the sofa your home.”

It was obvious from the mess, I’d spent the night there.

“Jordan has left me.” Why did I tell her that? Because she wasn’t a fool. Braer would have worked it out for herself, eventually.

“Oh no, Ariana. I’m so sorry.”

I nodded through my misery. “He needs to sort himself out,” I said, not knowing if I had the guts to tell her the details.

“I’ll make us something to eat. If you feel up to it, give Leon a call.”

“Yeah, I’ll do that.” I wiped away a stray tear. “I’ll clean myself up first.”
